Abuse & Neglect Program Checkup

August 7 to September 11, 2024 from 8:30 - 9:30 am HST



Overview

This 6-week virtual workshop reviews strategic elements to compliance with the Freedom from Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation regulations at §483.12, with an emphasis on abuse prevention efforts, effective policies and procedures, training, reporting requirements, conducting investigations and incident response management. Extensive IJ deficiency examples will be reviewed with discussion of effective programming and survey preparedness activities to prevent Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation related citations.


Learning Objectives

  1. Explore key action items that should be taken to prevent resident abuse, neglect and exploitation

  2. Break down critical processes for reporting and investigating allegations of abuse and how to effectively document to demonstrate compliance.

  3. Learn from examples of recent deficiencies including Immediate Jeopardy tags.

Evaluate the regulatory requirements for determining capacity to consent to sexual activity and will discuss tips and strategies for how to determine and document this information.

Review the regulatory requirements for investigating allegations of abuse and discuss tips and strategies for how to document this information.

Abuse Incident Response & Management

Explore the regulatory requirements for responding to allegations of abuse and discuss tips and strategies for how to effectively manage and document that response.

Retrospective Study of Abuse & Neglect IJ Deficiencies & Plans of Correction

Study past cited IJ deficiencies for abuse and neglect and the Plans of Correction for those deficiencies. A discussion will include tips and strategies for best practices for prevention of citations in this area.

Janine Lehman RN, RAC-CT, CLNC
Director of Legal Nurse Consulting

Janine Lehman RN, RAC-CT, CLNC, is a Registered Nurse with over 30 years’ experience in long term care, working in all nursing capacities from Nursing Assistant and Charge Nurse, to MDS Coordinator, Staff Development Coordinator, ADON and DON. She is MDS Certified through AANAC, and is a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. Her background includes serving as a Corporate Nurse Consultant, and the Director of Clinical Services for a multi-facility, multi-level of care organization. She has extensive experience in the RAI process, clinical documentation, legal nurse consulting, restorative nursing programs, fall management, QAPI, and infection control, and has provided training on these topics for State and National organizations.

Continuing Education

Proactive LTC Consulting is managing all NAB credits; HAH is managing ANCC credits.

Valid for the live sessions only: One (1) NAB contact hour is pending approval for each session. Nursing Home Administrators must provide their NAB ID # when registering in order for CE credit to be automatically uploaded to their NAB Registry account. (Example of NAB ID #: R1234567).

Valid for the live and on-demand content: This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by Oregon Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Approval valid through 08/07/2026 (live activity) or 08/07/2027 (enduring activity). OCEAN ID #2024-28.

Valid for the live webinars only: The first two (2) webinars in this series are approved by the National Association of Social Workers - Hawai`i Chapter (Approval HI62792023-125 & HI 62792023-126) for up to 1 Social Work continuing education contact hour per webinar. The other webinars are pending approval.
