The importance of infection prevention and control (IPC) in a healthcare setting cannot be overstated. It is a mandated effort, as regulated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and has a direct impact on patient care and safety. Join us as we delve into information on infection control and examine strategies to help reduce the risk of infections among residents/patients and healthcare staff.
Participants in this webinar series will examine the role and responsibilities of the infection preventionist and explore best practices in infection control measures when it comes to water management practices, cleaning and disinfection, antibiotic stewardship within the nursing home, and utilizing quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) within infection control programs.
June 27: Legionella Prevention and Water System Management in Healthcare Facilities
Legionella and other waterborne pathogens have been associated with outbreaks in healthcare settings, causing infections in patients/residents that may lead to severe illness or death. During this webinar, we will discuss factors that contribute to contaminated water sources and how this can lead to patient/resident infections. Based on the fact that CMS requires healthcare facilities to have water management plans, we will also explore CDC’s guidance for developing an effective water management program to not only meet this requirement but also help ensure the safety of patients/residents.
July 18: Beyond the Basics: Cleaning & Disinfection for Healthcare Facilities
Take your cleaning and disinfection program to the next level. Efficient and effective evaluation of cleaning and disinfection of patient/resident rooms and the use of supplemental disinfection strategies can mitigate the potential impact of the healthcare environment on the spreading of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) and infectious pathogens. Participants in this webinar will examine the pros and cons of different methods for evaluating cleaning and disinfection practices, discuss the impact of how disinfectants are applied to surfaces, and describe the pros and cons of supplemental strategies for enhancing disinfection.
August 1: Implementing Effective Antibiotic Stewardship in the Nursing Home
This webinar will build on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC's) Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship for Nursing Homes. Session participants will explore strategies that can be used to implement an effective antibiotic stewardship program, how to differentiate antibiotic stewardship metrics from infection surveillance metrics, and identify what data needs to be collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies selected to improve antibiotic use. In addition, resources needed to support the antibiotic stewardship committee case reviews of antibiotic use will be discussed.
September 12: The Role of QAPI in your Infection Prevention Program
Join us as we explore the role of the infection preventionist in quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) programs and how the QAPI committee can support infection prevention. During this webinar, we will examine the difference between quality assurance and performance improvement and also discuss tools to utilize during the QAPI process.

A.C. Burke is the VP for Healthcare Quality for RB Health Partners, Inc. In this role, she consults with long-term care facilities on infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and practices. She also provides training to nursing home infection preventionists and staff on a variety of infection prevention topics, antibiotic stewardship, and quality improvement.
A.C.’s prior experience includes working as the Director of Infection Prevention for Mayo Clinic Florida and the Healthcare-associated Infection Prevention Program Manager for the Florida Department of Health. She has 25 years of experience in the healthcare field and is nationally board certified in infection control (CIC).
