Overview

Join us as we take a look at a day in the life of the effective DON! This one-day virtual workshop focuses on skill building for serving effectively as the Director of Nursing with emphasis on effective leadership and staff engagement, nursing operations and systems of care for common conditions treated in the LTC setting.

Areas of focus will include:

  • Survey readiness & avoiding frequently cited deficiencies

  • HR management

  • Staff training/competency

  • Risk Management

  • QAPI activities targeting QM areas

  • Fundamentals of reimbursement

  • MDS oversight

  • Promoting 5-Star quality

What to expect: Gain skill and insight for serving effectively as the DON or in other nurse leadership roles.


Target Audience

Nurse leaders including new or experienced DONs, ADONs, charge nurses, unit managers, staff interested in serving in a permanent or interim DON role, Administrators, Corporate Staff


Learning Objectives

What participants will gain from attending this session:

  1. Examine common day-to-day responsibilities of the DON.

  2. Recognize the role and responsibilities of the DON in a successful Risk Management and HR Management program.

  3. Identify the key components for being survey ready every day.

  4. Discuss considerations to ensure effective MDS/RAI processes.

Janine Lehman RN, RAC-CT, CLNC

Director of Legal Nurse Consulting

Janine Lehman RN, RAC-CT, CLNC, is a Registered Nurse with over 30 years’ experience in long term care, working in all nursing capacities from Nursing Assistant and Charge Nurse, to MDS Coordinator, Staff Development Coordinator, ADON and DON. She is MDS Certified through AANAC, and is a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. Her background includes serving as a Corporate Nurse Consultant, and the Director of Clinical Services for a multi-facility, multi-level of care organization. She has extensive experience in the RAI process, clinical documentation, legal nurse consulting, restorative nursing programs, fall management, QAPI, and infection control, and has provided training on these topics for State and National organizations.

Continuing Education

In order to earn a continuing education (CE) certificate, individuals must attend the live workshop.

Valid for the live workshop only: This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by Oregon Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation for six (6) contact hours. Approval valid through 03/21/2026 (live activity). OCEAN ID #2024-07.

State licensure boards have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses. Janine Lehman and the planners of this educational activity have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose.

To receive a continuing education certificate each person must register for the workshop, pay the registration fee, attend the live workshop via the GoToWebinar link issued, and complete the corresponding HAH evaluation.
